The Brothers as seen from Alki Beach

We want to help you discover Washington's best natural events - every season, everywhere.

What we do

We learn about and explore the outdoors of Washington State and then pass our discoveries on to you. While there is always something to see, our focus is on those seasonal events that make this area unique - the birds and mammals that migrate through, the plants that bloom and grow, and the stunning geography that underpins it all.

While we would love to have every locale and activity listed immediately, we can't be everywhere at once! Please have patience while we expand this site, and keep up-to-date with our development by subscribing to our blog.

Who we are

portrait of MollyMolly is the founder of and webmaster for the Salish Seasonal Guide. She is also a contributing naturalist. She has a BA in art from Carleton College and an MS in Geosciences from UT Austin. When she isn't out and about having adventures related to this site, she works at the Science Education Resource Center in Northfield, MN.

portrait of JamesJames is a contributing naturalist with an MS in Zoology from Colorado State University. He wrote The Northwest Nature Guide and is currently a naturalist for Metro Regional Parks & Greenspaces and Smith & Bybee Wetlands Area in Portland, OR. When he isn't running around outdoors, he plays guitar in rock-and-roll bands. He is also Molly's uncle (which explains a lot about why she is such a nature geek).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Salish Sea?
  • The Salish Sea is the complex network of waterways and islands that stretches from Olympia, Washington to Desolation Sound in British Columbia. It includes Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Georgia Strait and surrounding waters. Naturalists and scientists prefer the term because it encompasses the entire Puget Sound/Gulf Island ecosystem.
  • Can I suggest a hike or activity?
  • Sure! Just remember - this is a seasonal guide, so be sure to include the best month or season for your excursion. You can reach us at salishseasonalguide (at) gmail (dot) com.
  • Where do you get your information?
  • We try to get all our information from firsthand experience or from reputable sources like guidebooks, newspapers, and scientific publications. If you want to know more about a particular subject, check the bottom of the page for a list of sources, or look for a more information link.
  • Who takes your photos?
  • Molly takes some of them, but we also use pictures taken by other staff members, donated photos or photos licensed under the Creative Commons.

We use a lot of photos from the US Forest Service and US Fish & Wildlife photostreams on Flickr.com - hover your mouse over any photo to see who took it.

If you have a photo you'd be willing to let us use (with full credit to you, of course!) please contact us at salishseasonalguide (at) gmail (dot) com.
