Winter can provide unique opportunities to see new and unusual sights. Don't let the cold or the gloom keep you from getting out there!

January is the perfect time to get outside and see who's visiting for the winter. Many birds spend the coldest months here before heading north in the spring - keep your eye out for swans, raptors, waterfowl and winter ducks.

Many animals are active all winter, and their tracks are easy for skiers and snowshoers to spot in freshly fallen snow.

January also has the clearest night skies of the year, making the full moon and the Quadrantid Meteor Shower (already impressive) truly spectacular.

And if you've lived in this region for any length of time, you know that January can bring some big, powerful storms. Head out to the coast to see Nature's fury close-up.
